A different take on railway preservation
GNER
A brand saved for the future
Railway preservation is showing initial signs of decline - funds are becoming less available, the pool of spare parts is lessening and the overall volunteer base is getting thin. Young people are moving from steam to preserved diesels and multiple units. The onset of COVID-19 brought income issues to preservation outfits and smaller preserved lines are seeing difficulties with keeping themselves open. It’s time we look at railway preservation through a different lens. Rather than invest in a single physical asset (such as a locomotive or other rolling stock), I began investigating in owning a metaphysical asset - railway intellectual property.
In 2021, I purchased the remaining trademarks for GNER (Great North Eastern Railway) and established GNER Ltd, a company that holds the trademarks - with the goal of bringing GNER back to railway enthusiasts in a different format. I am still in early stages of this strategy - but remain assured, I am protective over it as much as others.
The trademarks are protected and can only be used with the correct licensing arrangement from myself. Without a licensing agreement, I will pursue a legal case to protect the intellectual property.
The trademarks can be found within the UK IPO (Intellectual Property Office) under No. UK00003680573
